2005 Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis at Cafe Adrift Restaurant, Anacortes, Washington
Crab cakes caused two persons to be hospitalized in Anacortes, Washington, due to Salmonella Enteritidis ditis infections. The crab cakes were prepared with whole, raw eggs and kept up to two to three days prior to cooking. Environmental health investigators found that the crab cakes were not cooked to 145 F as required by state code due to their size. The thickness of the cake prevented thorough cooking without burning the exterior of the cake.
