2007 Outbreak of Norovirus at Augusta Middle School Cafeteria, Kansas

In April, many teachers and students of the Augusta Middle School developed gastrointestinal illness. Gastrointestinal illness consistent with the symptoms of norovirus was present in the student body prior to April 11, with an average of five students becoming ill each day. On April 11, there was a spike in illness; sixty nine students became ill. From the epidemiologic analysis eating lunch in the school cafeteria on April 10 tripled a student's risk of illness. Eating lunch in the cafeteria on April 9 appeared to increase the risk of illness as well. Taco salad was the only specific food item, from the lunch on April 10, to be statistically associated with illness, however other food items may have contributed to illness as well. There were two cafeteria food workers who had reported nausea between April 9 and 12. New illnesses occurred in the school after April 11, it was likely that person-to-person transmission or food worker contamination continued to propogate the outbreak in the school. The same strain of Norovirus was isolated from the stool of some of the ill students.
