2010 Salmonella Tyhpi Linked to Mamey Fruit
Mamey fruit pulp, or juice, produced by COCO, S.A. of Guatemala, and distributed under the brand names, Goya (Goya Foods, Inc.), and La Nuestra (Montalvan Sales), was implicated in an outbreak of typhoid fever in three states. Laboratory isolates collected from confirmed cases were a genetic match to one another. A non-typhi strain of Salmonella was isolated from an unopened package of frozen mamey pulp obtained from a case-patient home. Salmonella Typhi is the strain of Salmonella that causes the disease, typhoid. Mamey fruit pulp, sometimes called zapote or sapote, is a tropical fruit grown in Central and South America and is commonly found in markets nationwide, particularly in Hispanic communities. The product is often used in shakes and smoothies. The cases were of Hispanic ethnicity. COCO, S.A., mamey fruit pulp was previously implicated in an outbreak of typhoid fever in Florida in 1998-99.
