2015 Salmonella Linked to Barber Foods Brand Frozen Chicken Kiev

State health and agriculture officials in Minnesota investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis linked to Barber Foods Chicken Kiev. A total of 15 people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Enteritidis were reported by seven states. Dates of illness onset ranged from April 5, 2015 to July 27, 2015. Among 10 people with available information, 4 were hospitalized. There were no deaths. There were 9 outbreak associated cases. The Pulsenet outbreak code for this investigation is 1506MNJEG-2. CDC's National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System laboratory conducted antibiotic resistance testing on clinical isolates collected from 4 people infected with the outbreak strain. All four isolates tested were resistant to ampicillin and tetracycline. Barber Foods issued a recall of approximately 1.7 million pounds of frozen, raw stuffed chicken products on July 12, 2015. This recall expanded the initial Barber Foods recall of chicken kiev on July 2, 2015. On July 13, 2015 Omaha Steaks announced a recall of stuffed chicken breast products manufactured by Barber Foods.
