2016 Outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus, Wise County, Virginia

In March 2016 Wise County, Virginia health officials investigated an outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus among persons attending a wedding reception or consuming food served at the reception. The local health department conducted a retrospective cohort study, performed environmental health inspections, and collected specimens for testing at the Virginia Department of Laboratory Services. Nineteen survey respondents reported becoming ill after the reception. Eighteen became ill within 7 hours of consuming food at the reception. eating barbeque pork (RR=2.0, 95% CI= undefined) and wedding cake (RR=2.4, 95% CI = 1.2-4.8) were most strongly associated with illness. Staphylococcus aureus isolated from leftover barbeque pork and specimens collected from 6 patients were indistinguishable by PFGE. The local health department identified several food safety issues with the smoker from a local grocery chain and the storage methods of an individual who prepared food for the reception.
