2019 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis Linked to Moby Dick House of Kabob

On Sept. 26, 2019 the Maryland Dept. of Health (MDH) announced an outbreak of salmonella infections in individuals who all reported eating at Moby Dick House of Kabob restaurant, which has multiple locations in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. MARYLAND CASES: In total there were 23 laboratory confirmed outbreak associated cases and 5 probable cases reported by the State of Maryland. Three of the Maryland cases were hospitalized. There were no deaths in Maryland. Dates of illness onset occurred from September 4, 2020 to September 20, 2020. Other cases were identified in the District of Columbia and Virginia. The foods most commonly consumed were hummus and chicken. An onsite inspection of the Moby Dick House of Kabob commissary revealed a number of concerns regarding general sanitation and cleanliness at the facility. Food particles were found in and around the grinder used to prepare hummus and food debris was found in the walk-in coolers. Multiple opportunities for cross-contamination of ready-to-eat foods were observed. Raw meats including chicken with dripping juices were transported throughout the hummus preparation area. Distributor invoices from Moby Dick showed that raw chicken was sourced by the same firm that had a positive USDA chicken food sample, indicating that the hummus was likely cross-contaminated with Salmonella at the commissary. Patient isolates were a genetic match to an isolate obtained from the positive chicken food sample. Environmental swabs and food samples were collected but were negative for the presence of Salmonella.
