2019 Outbreak of Grimontia hollisae Infections Associated with Live Blue Crab, Washington

In 2019 Public Health Seattle King County (PHSKC) investigated a household cluster of Grimontia hollisae associated with eating raw blue crab purchased live from Seafood City in Tukwila, Washington. The crab was purchased on January 18, 2019. Onset of illness occurred January 18-19. One person was laboratory confirmed with Grimontia hollisae. One person was hospitalized. Both recovered. PHSKC Environmental Health investigators visited Seafood City on February 12, 2019. They did not identify any factors that contributed to the spread of Grimontia bacteria, such as incorrect refrigeration temperatures or evidence of cross-contamination. Grimontia hollisae is part of the same family as Vibrio It was formerly known as Vibrio hollisae and resembles Vibrio parahaemolyticus in terms of where it lives and how it causes illness.
