Hy Vee Grocery for Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church Thanksgiving Dinner 2004

More than 100 people became ill after eating a Thanksgiving meal. The Cedar Falls, Hy-Vee grocery store prepared the foods that were served at the Thanksgiving dinner the Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church; some of these meals were delivered to private homes by church volunteers. The investigation revealed that the turkey had not been cooked adequately. The turkey contained a high number of Clostridium perfringens; there was evidence that the turkey was highly contaminated. Media coverage of the outbreak at the church prompted reporting of a similar outbreak among employees of the local Ryder Truck Company. Seventeen persons became ill after eating the turkey dinner prepared by the same Hy-Vee grocery store.
