Milwaukee Sandwich Shops Sandwiches 1992

A food worker who was employed at sandwich shops in downtown Milwaukee and at a university campus developed hepatitis A. The illness was reported to the health department. The health department found no sanitary violations or evidence of hepatitis A in other food workers at the downtown sandwich shop; the university sandwich shop was not inspected. The two sandwich shops were owned by the same person and received some produce in common. Although the infected food handler assessed his own hand hygiene highly, other persons reported poor hand hygiene. Immune globulin was not offered to restaurant patrons. An outbreak of hepatitis A resulted. Fifty case-patients had eaten at the university sandwich shop and 180 had eaten at the downtown location. Because 228 of the case-patients ate exclusively at one of the two shops and because no prepared food was shared between the shops, the assessment was that the food became contaminated, independently, at each site.
