Twenty one of 24 persons who attended a baby shower developed gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella Enteritidis. Eating a homemade baked ziti pasta dish was associated with illness. the dish was made with raw egg and ricotta cheese and with a cooked tomato meat sauce. The ziti was refrigerated overnight and then cooked before serving. Several people commented that the center of the ziti was still cold when served. Salmonella Enteritidis was isolated from the baked ziti and from eggs. The eggs came from a New Jersey egg producer, and Salmonella Enteritidis was isolated from the bird flocks.
