1998 Outbreak of E. coli O157:NM Infections Associated with Alfalfa and Clover Mixed Sprouts, California

An alfalfa and clover sprout mix was associated with an outbreak of E. coli O157:NM infections. A single sprout grower was one of several sprout sources for 25% of case-patients and was the sole source of sprouts for 75% of case-patients. The sprout grower had disinfected the seeds irregularly; numerous violations of Good Manufacturing Practices were identified.
