1999 Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Linked to Salami, Canada
Over a twelve week period, 143 cases of genetically indistinguishable, E. coli O157:H7 were identified in British Columbia, Canada. Salami was implicated as the food vehicle. The salami had been produced by Fleetwood Sausage Company. Fleetwood Sausage used a dry fermentation process that was inadequate to prevent the contamination. E. coli O157:H7 was found in the salami and matched the strain of E. coli O157:H7 that had been identified in the people.
