Twelve Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 11b cases were detected in Alberta and Saskatchewan by June. Eleven of the twelve cases had consumed meals at Vietnamese restaurants; seven different restaurants were cited. All of the cases had consumed mung bean sprouts. The sprouts originated from the same bean supplier. The beans had been imported by a wholesaler in British Columbia and distributed to different sprouters. All implicated restaurants were supplied sprouts by one of the sprouters who had received the beans. A common supplier was not identified for other foods that were investigated.
