Papas rellenas served at a Miami, Florida, restaurant on July 5, 2002 led to an outbreak of Salmonella Group D. Ill cases had eaten the potatoes and no other food items. The potatoes could not be confirmed as the vehicle as there were no available controls and no remaining food items for testing. Papa rellena (stuffed potato) contains mashed potato and ground beef. Usually both items are individually cooked, but the restaurant used canned instant mashed potato with pasteurized milk. This food item has a center of ground beef surrounded by a ball of mashed potatoes that is dipped in egg and breaded. The product is then fried in oil.
