The Tennessee Department of Health received a report of two cases of Trichinella in November. A 38 year-old man and a 54-year old woman were admitted to the hospital with fever, chills, myalgias, and facial swelling. Both tested positive for Trichinella antibodies. The health department officials questioned their food history and found they had consumed black bear meat. The man had killed the bear in August 2003. The two cases had eaten medium-rare bear steaks recently. The leftover meat was given to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and to the USDA; it was found to contain Trichinella nativa worms
