2004 Outbreak of Botulism at a Prison Linked to Pruno, California
Five inmates in a California prison developed botulism after drinking an alcoholic drink, "pruno." The "pruno" was a drink concocted by the inmates. Pruno was made from bread crusts, fruit scraps and potato peels which were fermented to make an alcoholic drink. The batch of pruno did not ferment enough to kill the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Treatment for the prisoners cost $352,000 and depleted the regional supply of botulism anti-toxin.
