In August and September,, 2005, 2.4% of the inmates at a New York state correctional facility reported diarrhea. Seventeen had bloody stools which led the facility to submit stool samples for laboratory testing. Sixteen samples tested positive for shiga toxin and were forwarded for further analysis to the New York State Department of Health-Wadsworth Center. Tests found E. coli, but were unable to determine the serotype. Three samples were then sent to the CDC for serotyping, which resulted in classification as E. coli O45:NM. All three samples were matched using pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The source of the outbreak was determined to be an ill food worker. This an important outbreak as it involved a non-O157 shiga toxin producing E. coli.
