2005 Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 at the Big Fresno Fair/Great American Petting Zoo, California
At least six children who attended the Big Fresno Fair and who had visited the petting zoo developed illnesses caused by the same strain of E. coli O157:H7. The petting zoo was operated by Great American Petting Zoo. United Site Services provided alcohol hand sanitizer stations. The exact animal source of the infections was not identified, however petting zoos have been linked to previous outbreaks of enteric infections. Alcohol hand sanitizer cleaners are not a substitute for thorough hand washing with soap and running water.
