In early May, the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) of Michigan received a report of a gastrointestinal disease outbreak among school staff who had attended a meeting. For lunch, the school provided a party sized, submarine sandwich from the Grand Rapids, Michigan, Blimpie's Restaurant. Twenty-three of the twenty-nine staff members became ill. KCHD received reports of a second cluster the next day. This group had eaten a party submarine sandwich from Blimpie's as well. Fifty five of the 95 people interviewed reported symptoms of gastroenteritis. There was also a report of illness from a social service organization who had eaten the same type of sandwich. Nine of the 18 people at that lunch became ill. Other members of the community also reported illness and exposure to Blimpie's sandwiches. Several stool samples tested positive for norovirus particles. The illness was traced to an ill food worker. An environmental investigation found that employees washed their hands in the same sink as lettuce was washed, creating a route for contamination of produce products.
