2006 Clostridium perfringens Infections at a Jail Linked to Consumption of Chicken, Alabama
Inmates of an Alabama jail who had eaten baked chicken developed illness suspected to be caused by Clostridium perfringens. This large outbreak skewed the Center for Disease Control's annual foodborne illness data for 2006. While Clostridium perfringens is a known cause of foodborne illness, it had not been a leading cause until the figures from this outbreak were added to the total.
