Inmates at the Ottawa County Fillmore Complex jail, in Michigan, suffered gastrointestinal illness on May 17 after breakfast. An investigation found the vehicle to be powdered milk, that was improperly cooled after being mixed with hot water. This allowed for the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The prison had just switched to powdered milk to cut costs, making that product suspect from the beginning. Samples of the milk were sent to a lab for testing and came back positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The jail returned to using carton milk after this incident.
