In September 2007 local and state health officials in Indiana investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157 and Shigella among children who attended the Galena Elementary School in Floyds Knob, Indiana. The only common exposure among case-patients was attending the elementary school. In total there were 15 cases of E. coli O157 (10 confirmed cases and 5 probable cases) and 5 cases of Shigella (4 confirmed cases and 1 probable case). Illness onset for both groups ranged occurred September 13-27 with the majority of cases experiencing onset between September 13-18. Ten patients diagnosed with E. coli O157 were hospitalized. Eight developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. None of the Shigella cases were hospitalized. There were no deaths. Investigators concluded that illnesses were most likely due to person-to-person exposure and were not attributable to a school meal or event.
