In January 2007, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Indian Health Services (IHS) investigated an outbreak of norovirus associated with a restaurant located at a casino in Pine County. Attendees at the Minnesota State Trooper's Association met at the casino during January 9 and 10. In addition to the meal served at the meeting, many attendees also ate breakfast and dinner at the casino.

Twelve of 16 meeting attendees met the case definition for an outbreak case. No one was hospitalized and no one died. Five stool samples collected from cases were positive for norovirus genogroup II. All were sequenced and were indistinguishable.

IHS assessed food worker illness and food preparation practices at the casino. Three cooks reported vomiting and diarrhea in the week prior to the meeting and all of them reported working banquets. It was unclear if these specific food workers prepared food for the State Trooper's Association meeting. Nonetheless, MDH concluded that the likely source of the outbreak was one or more infected food worker who contaminated ready-to-eat food items.
