Three diners at a Lee County, Florida, restaurant on March 30, 2007 reported symptoms similar to allergic reactions upon taking one bite of escolar fish. One of the cases was taken to the emergency room where she was given antihistamines. A second case also took antihistamines and used an Epi-pen to treat her symptoms. The hospitalized patient was diagnosed with scomboid fish poisoning. Lee County Health Department officials determined that the source of the escolar was a distributor in Orlando, Florida. The distributor received the fish from Ecuador on ice and filleted the fish within the distribution facility. A fish sample tested positive for elevated histamine levels.
