A cluster of campylobacter cases occurred in Del Norte County, California. One of the hospitalized cases was diagnosed with acute motor axonal neuropathy, a form of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare complication of campylobacter infection. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is known to occur when infections trigger the immune system to attack the body's nerve cells, resulting in paralysis. This person developed the typical gastrointestinal symptoms of campylobacter three days after drinking a raw (unpasterized) milk kefir; hospitalization became necessary ten days later when Guillain Barre Syndrome developed. Fifteen of the sixteen cases had consumed unpasteurized milk from a cow-leasing program run by the dairy. The sixteenth case was a dairy employee who worked directly with the cattle of this farm. Campylobacter jejuni was found in a refrigerated sample of this dairy's milk. The cow-leasing program closed in June.
