Through laboratory surveillance, the Minnesota Department of Health discovered three isolates of Salmonella IV 6,7:z4,z24:-, an unusual strain of Salmonella that is associated with reptiles. These isolates were from three people who had attended the same potluck dinner. Additional cases were found after potluck attendees were interviewed. Consumption of gravy was associated with illness risk. The person who prepared the food owned bearded dragon reptiles. Environmental samples were collected from the home of this person. Salmonella was recovered from environmental samples, including the reptiles' terrarium and from kitchen sink drains. The outbreak strain was isolated only from vacuum cleaner bag contents. The food preparer denied having recent gastroenteritis.
