The church had sponsored a fundraiser to benefit the family of an ill child. Food for the event had been prepared at a local hunting club and sold to the church for use at the fundraiser. Barbecue pork, baked sweet potatoes, coleslaw, and rolls comprised the BBQ plate menu. At least 125 people reported illness after buying food at the fundraiser, including fourteen whose illness was so severe they had to be hospitalized.
