2009 Outbreak of Shigellosis Linked to Sugar Snap Peas, Sweden
An outbreak of Shigella dysenteriae, type 2, was identified in Sweden. Shigella outbreaks were rare in Sweden. Sugar snap peas originating from Kenya were implicated as the source of illness. Although microbiologic analysis of the sugar snap peas showed fecal contamination, no shigella was isolated from the product. Concurrent outbreaks in Denmark and Norway related to sugar snap peas were referenced.
