The public was urged to dispose of dairy products produced by Pasture Maid Creamery in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. The raw milk from the dairy was tested and found to contain Campylobacter. The health department had received reports of Campylobacter-related illness among persons who had consumed the milk. Pasture Maid Creamery sold raw milk directly to consumers who sometimes provided their own bottles. Adam Dean, the dairy owner, also owned a separate dairy, Dean's Dairy, in Sharpsville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania which produced only pasteurized milk for sale in supermarkets; this milk was not linked to the outbreak. One person developed Guillian Barre Syndrome, a condition that causes paralysis, as a result of their Campylobacter infection.
