2010 Outbreak of E. coli O157 Infections Linked to a Faulty Wastewater System, Mississippi
In November 2010 the Mississippi State Department of Health investigated a cluster of E. coli O157:H7 cases in the Tombigbee Public Health District IV (Starkville/Columbus area). Nine patients were confirmed with E. coli O157:H7 and 4 patients were considered to be probable cases. All 13 individuals resided in 3 households that shared a sewage system. Investigators attributed the outbreak to a failed wastewater system and pooled untreated sewage.
