On June 24, France reported a cluster of cases of bloody diarrhea in a group of people who attended a community event held at a recreational center in Bègles, Bordeaux, on June 8. At least twelve participants developed bloody diarrhea or hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication of E. coli infection. Infection was also confirmed among contacts of the cases. The E. coli O104:H4 strain involved in this outbreak was identical to the strain isolated in a sprout-related outbreak in Germany (See International Outbreak Fenugreek Sprouts 2011). Reportedly a gazpacho garnished with sprouts had been served at the community event. On June 29, the possibility was announced that fenugreek sprouts made from Egyptian fenugreek seed could have been responsible for this outbreak and for the concurrent outbreak in Germany. The Egyptian fenugreek seeds were imported in 2009 and/or 2010 by AGA SAAT GMBH, a German seed importer and sold to a British firm, Thompson and Morgan, that in turn sold the seeds sprouted in this outbreak. On July 5, the European Union officially withdrew from the market, and temporarily banned the import, of certain types of seeds from Egypt.
