In August 2011, St. Louis Park Environmental Health (SLPEH) and Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) staff investigated an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among staff and campers at a week-long day camp run by the City of St. Louis Park. Activities at the camp included lunch at a restaurant on August 1, approximately 30 hours prior to individuals reportedly becoming ill.

Illness histories and exposure information were obtained from 13 camp staff and campers. Six cases were identified. All six reported vomiting, 4 reported diarrhea, 3 reported cramps and 2 of five reported fever. The median incubation period from the lunch meal at the restaurant was 37 hours (range, 29 to 53 hours). Due to a limited menu, a meaningful statistical analysis could not be performed. Foods consumed by the patrons included pizza and soda. All other foods consumed that day were pre-packaged and individual sized.

No ill employees were identified at the restaurant. Investigators theorized that it is possible that an unidentified camp staff member or camper contaminated the food or infected others furing camp activies.
