An outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections was associated with eating organic eggs produced by Larry Schultz Organic Farms, Owatonna, Minnesota. The eggs were distributed to restaurants, grocery stores, food wholesalers and foodservice companies in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan and were voluntarily recalled.

Eight cases were identified, including 7 confirmed cases and one probable case. Illness onset dates ranged from August 12, 2011 to October 20, 2011. Three cases were hospitalized. No one died.

Minnesota Department of Agriculture inspectors visited the farm to review records and sample the barn and processing/candling areas. Two samples, both taken from the egg belt, tested positive for S. Enteritidis and were indistinguishable to clinical samples by PFGE.
