2011 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Johannesburg Infections Linked to Baby Chicks and Ducklings
Two separate outbreaks of Salmonella were linked to contact with baby chicks and ducklings raised and sold by a single Ohio-based, mail order hatchery. In this outbreak Salmonella Johannesburg was isolated in 28 individuals residing in 15 states. Salmonella Altona infections were isolated in the other outbreak. The chicks and ducklings had been purchased from multiple locations of the same nationwide agriculture feed store and originated from a single Ohio hatchery.
