2011 Outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus Infections at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Portland, Oregon
A confirmed outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus infections was associated with eating hollandaise sauce, or eggs benedict, for breakfast, on July 17, 2011 at the Portland Crowne Plaza Hotel. Six of the ill were at the hotel to participate in the National Association of Counties conference. The other ill person was a flight attendant and not associated with the conference. Although no food samples tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus, the identical strain of Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the nares of one food worker and from the stool of two patrons. Four additional food workers were found to be carrying other strains of Staph aureus in their nares. The hollandaise sauce reportedly had been made on the morning of the breakfast and held in a stove without temperature monitoring. It was suspected that the sauce had been contaminated by an infected food worker.
