2012-2013 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup Infections Associated with Poultry Contact

Forty-four cases of Salmonella Braenderup infections were identified by 24 states. Illness onsets ranged from July 25, 2012 to December 13, 2013. There were 6 hospitalizations and no deaths.

Data collected from Interviews with 26 (74%) of 35 cases with available exposure information, implicated exposure to live poultry prior to illness onset. Twelve potential source hatcheries in 9 states were identified. Six cases, including a case in Minnesota, reported the hatchery in Webster City, Iowa as the source of live poultry.
