During November 24-27, 2012 the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) was notified that 8 male inmates of prison "A" had been hospitalized for suspected botulism. Serum samples from all 8 inmates tested positive for botulinum type A. Seven of the inmates were intubated. An investigation by the ADHS, Pinal County Health Services, and the CDC identified pruno as the outbreak source. Pruno typically is made by fermenting fruit and sugar in water; other commonly used ingredients include potatoes, corn, bread, and rice. In this outbreak pruno was made with potatoes.
