On April 13, the Oregon Health Authority announced that they were investigating an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7. Nineteen patients diagnosed with E. coli O157:H7 were identified. In addition, one patient was infected with Campylobacter and one patient was infected with Cryptosporidium, making the total 21 persons ill after consuming Foundation Farm raw milk. Four children were hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome. The outbreak was confirmed and was subsequently linked to the consumption of raw milk from Foundation Farm in Clackamas County, Oregon. Laboratory tests showed the presence of the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 in the farm's milk and in environmental samples collected from the farm. Foundation Farm sold raw milk to 48 families in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties through a herd-sharing program. The farm had been in this business for approximately one year.
