2012 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Infantis Infections Associated with Live Poultry Contact

In 2012, local, state and federal officials investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Infantis infections associated with contact with live chicks. Twenty-seven cases were reported from 9 states. Seven people were hospitalized. No one died. Onset dates ranged from April 16 to September 16, 2012.

Minnesota Department of Health collected 3 chick fecal samples from the household of an outbreak case. All three samples yielded Salmonella Infantis and were a genetic match to the outbreak strain.

Nine potential source hatcheries for chicks purchased by cases were identified. Poultry purchases were traced to a hatchery located in Bancroft, Iowa.
