2012 Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Infections Linked to Unpasteurized Cow's Milk, Missouri
In March 2012 the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to consumption of unpasteurized (raw) cow's milk produced by a Howard County dairy. Nineteen cases were identified - 10 confirmed cases, 6 probable cases and 3 suspect cases. Isolates obtained from the 10 laboratory confirmed cases were PFGE matches (Missouri PFGE pattern combination MOE050/MBE006). Cases were reported from five counties in Missouri. All 19 reported consumption of raw milk. Eighty nine percent reported consuming raw milk produced by the Howard County dairy. Five cases were hospitalized. One patient developed HUS.
