In June 2012 an outbreak of Clostridium perfringens infections among attendees at a catered picnic was reported by Public Health Seattle King County in Washington state. There were 237 illnesses. No one was hospitalized and there were no deaths. Both leftover food and stool from ill attendees tested positive for C. perfringens. An investigation of the caterer revealed evidence of temperature abuse including improper cooling, and insufficient hot and cold holding. The caterer was temporarily closed to correct observed violations in food handling procedures.
