2012 Outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis at a Community Splash Pad, Sauk Rapids, Minnesota
Two cases of Cryptosporidiosis were identified by Minnesota Department of Health officials in July 2012. Both had played in a splash pad located in Sauk Rapids multiple times in the 2 weeks prior to illness onset. Both were laboratory confirmed. One sample tested positive for Cryptosporidium parvum subtype BGP18. The splash pad was closed on July 24 and superchlorinated with 20 parts per million for 12.75 hours. Review of the water quality reports from early July showed multiple occasions on which the free chlorine residual was recorded at zero while the splash pad was experiencing multiple mechanical problems. Investigators concluded the parasite was most likely introduced by an infectious splash pad user and that the lack of disinfectant in the water led to protracted time at which splash pad users were at risk.
