In June 2012 Minnesota public health officials investigated an outbreak of norovirus among people who attended a party held on June 16 at a private home located in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Foods served at the party included 3 types of sandwiches purchased from a restaurant, chips, strawberries, watermelon, pasta salad and cake. Illness histories and exposure information was obtained from 12 attendees. Seven cases were identified. Four other individuals reported illness but 3 of experienced onset during the week prior to the party. The fourth person was ill more than 72 hours after the party. The three individuals who were ill prior to the party resided at the home where the party took place. One of the individuals helped prepare food for the party, including slicing the fruit and cutting the cake. Three stool samples were obtained and tested for norovirus at the Minnesota Department of Health Public Health Laboratory. One sample was from a primary case, one sample was from a secondary case and one was from the individual who was ill prior to the party and who helped prepare food. All three were positive for norovirus GI. Nucleic acid sequencing was conducted on all three of the positive norovirus samples. The nucleic acid sequences were identical. Only one non-ill control was interview making a meaningful statistical analysis of food impossible. However all of the cases reported eating strawberries or watermelon.
