2012 Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis Infections at a Restaurant, Minnesota

In April 2012 Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Wabasha County Public Health Environmental Health staff conducted an outbreak investigation among patrons of a Lake City, Minnesota restaurant. A total of 26 restaurant patrons were interviewed. Four met the case definition. All four tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis SE1B1. All four had eaten at the restaurant on April 8 (Easter Sunday) and consumed crab cake Benedict and/or egg frittata. Investigators determined that the hollandaise sauce was prepared in a double boiler and held at room temperature for 3.5 hours. The frittata was baked the day before and reheated in the microwave and oven-finished for serving. The eggs were sourced from a small farm located in Mantorville, Minnesota.
