In May 2012 Minnesota Department of Health staff investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Newport among individuals who attended a graduation party held at a private residence on May 12. Five of 6 laboratory confirmed cases of S. Newport were interviewed. Illness onsets ranged from May 13 to 15. Party attendees reported consuming a variety of foods including goat (n=2), chicken (n=2), rice (n=2), salad (n=1), goat tripe (n=1), meat pie (n=1), fish (n=1), and chips (n=1). The party host refused to provide investigators with contact information for other party attendees so non-ill attendees could not be interviewed. The lack of non-ill controls precluded a meaningful analysis of food exposures. The party host said that the goat and chicken were purchased from a live animal market in St. Paul and that all of the foods were prepared in the same kitchen prior to the event.
