In August and October 2014 Oasis Brands, Inc. voluntarily recalled several cheese due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was triggered by product testing conducted by the Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services. Public health investigators used PFGE and whole genome sequencing to patient data and identified five cases. Patients resided in Florida (2), Georgia (1), New York (1), South Carolina (1), Tennessee (2) and Texas (1). Eight of the 9 patients were hospitalized. One person in Tennessee died. One illness was related to a pregnancy and was diagnosed in a newborn. All ill persons were reported to be of Hispanic ethnicity and reported consuming Hispanic-style soft cheese. The two persons who were able to answer questions about specific varieties of Hispanic-style soft cheeses reported consuming quesito casero although neither could remember the brand. One person became ill in September 2013, four persons became ill during June through October 2014.
