In August 2013 the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) interviewed 4 cases of cryptosporidiosis who all reported attending the Scott County Fair on July 27. The fair took place between July 23 and July 27. All four cases sought medical care from their physician. One case was hospitalized for 3 days. The Cryptosporidium in one case's specimen could not be identified to species by MDH. Specimens from the other three laboratory-confirmed cases were identified to species and subtyped using polymerase chain reaction. All three specimens were found to have C. parvum BGP5 (IIaA15G2R2).

All four cases reported entering all of the animal barns at the fair. Three cases reported direct contact with calves. One case reported no direct contact with any animal but touched the fencing near the animals i all the barns.

Public health investigators concluded this was an outbreak of C. parvum infections likely associated with calf contact at the Scott County Fair. Calves are a frequent source of C. parvum.
