In June 2013 Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) staff investigated an outbreak of Cryptosporidium infections among attendees of an event called "Breakfast on the Farm" held on June 1, 2013 at a dairy farm located in Albany, Minnesota. The event included breakfast, ice cream, photo opportunities with calves, a petting zoo, wagon rides and tours of the dairy cow and calf barns. Two cases were identified through routine surveillance. One of the cases had direct contact with calves, goats, sheep, pigs and llamas during the event prior to eating breakfast. The second case had no reported contact with animals at the event. Specimens collected from both cases were found to have Cryptosporidium parvum, although they had different subtypes, BGP13 (IIaA16G2R1) and BGP18 (IIaA16G2R2).
