In October 2013 Allegheny County (Pennsylvania) Health Department investigated an outbreak of E. coli infections O157:H7 among patrons of The Porch, a restaurant located in Oakland, Pennsylvania. Most of the customers who became sick consumed hamburgers. However, public health investigators could not determine if ground beef used in the hamburgers was contaminated with E. coli O157 or if the bacteria was spread through improper food handling. In total there were 24 outbreak associated cases. Eight people were hospitalized. No one died.
