2013 E. Coli O57:H7 Infections Associated with Swimming in Lake Minnetonka
In July 2013 the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) investigated an outbreak of E. Coli O157:H7 among three individuals who shared an indistinguishable strain by PFGE, pattern MN179ECB13 (Minnesota designation). All three cases reported boating and swimming as part of separate groups in the Big Island area of Lake Minnetonka on July 4. The source of the bacteria in the water was not identified. Lakes can be contaminated from multiple sources including animal waste, individual septic systems or sewage spills, improper boat waste disposal, or ill swimmers.
